This list is work in progress and it keeps getting updated and improved. I think it might be the most comprehensive list of Trance and Progressive, Dance and Happy Hardcore artists around. It sure helps me!
22 Lockdown – Their first offering “Never Gonna Let You Go” (2009) just immediately grabbed me. It features the soul tingled vocals of Dani Clay in a track which is a remake of the smash hit by Tina Moore. It’s going to take the charts by storm once again. The ever reliable Agent X had followed in the footsteps of their chart topping Platnum and H20 mixes (which have been played lots of WeeKenDance) and delivered a well crafted floorfiller. I hope you love it as much as I do.
4 Strings - Behind the name 4 Strings hides 2 musicians, Carlo and Jan. They’ve known each other since 1986 and are one of the best dance music producer/DJ duos in the world. With 4 Strings be prepared for the unpredictable with amazing tracks that both excite existing fans and sweep up new ones.
I featured Music Save My Life on Autumn on WeekenDance 2010 and I know some new fans were born!
Above and Beyond – If you love your trance you love Above and Beyond. They consist of Tony McGuinness, Jonathan Grant & Paavo Olavi Siljamäki and they have their own label which if you’re into trance you would have heard of it – that’s Anjunabeats.
When Pete Tong of UKs Radio 1 describes you as "the UK's new trance superstars' – there really isn’t much more to say. I think their music does all the talking.
Al Storm - Alistair Taylor first started appearing under his original DJ Storm alias around 1996 and there’s no doubt his production CV is a storm in the Dance Music scene. Over the last 14 years he has continued to amass an impressive discography of well over 100 releases. May the storm continue!
Adam K – This Canadian trance and progressive artist came to my attention in 2007 with Twilight which he did with Soha. It’s a classic trance track that’s moved people across dance floors around the world. I was delighted in 2009 to find his great new track “You’re Not Alone” which is irresistible.
Agnes - Agnes Carlsson won Season 2 of the Swedish Idol series in 2005. Early in 2009 I accidentally found a track “Release Me” and then noticed it being released around the world throughout the year. It made it's debut on the UK Singles Chart in May 2009.
I listen to hundreds of the latest dance tracks each year and within seconds I had the ear to ear smile, then I started moving, I pumped it up and by half way I was dancing. My patient wife walked past and said “I guess that one’s in the new line up”. It’s her favourite track in the WeeKenDance Winter 2009 Line Up.
Alex K - It’s just great that Alex K, Alex Karbouris, is Australian and has ripped through the UK club scene. If you only bought one dance CD a year and it was Alex K, you can be assured of a party. His gold selling Ultimate NRG albums are pure gold.
His dance, bounce, scouse, NRG style is distinctive and you go “Yay” it’s a new one from Alex and your moving. You can quickly hear why he is known worldwide as the “Godfather of Bounce”.
I first came across Alex K during the trials for Wild FM in Sydney during the 90s. Australia needed a dance radio station, Wild was what everyone wanted. Government bureaucracy and small mindedness killed Wild but the memory continues through their CDs and people like Alex K that made it happen. Alphabeat - What's got twelve legs, jumps up and down and comes from Copenhagen? It’s Alphabeat. There are 6 of them and three are called Anders so at least you know half the group already. I’ve always figured if there are six in a band, you need to be good because a 6 way money split is never fun.
So you need an ambitious mission and Alphabeat’s is for the entire planet to spend one hour each day dancing to Alphabeat’s furious, happy and infectious sound. You’ll never forget them now.
I warn you, that sound bounces into your head and hangs around. The Wideboys Remix of their track Hole in My Heart sold me. Every time I hear it – I’m straight to my feet. AMS - Owner of the fast-rising Switched On Records, Allen Smith from Adelaide South Australia, otherwise known as trance, hard dance and hardcore sensation A.M.S, is one of the most sought-after production talents in the hard dance and rave scenes. Since exploding out of nowhere in 2002, Allen’s consistently innovative production work has made an appearance on every edition of Reacts legendary Bonkers series since Bonkers 8, that adds up to a total of 29 tracks and growing. He’s also appeared on plenty of other major compilation albums.
Allen stands tall as one of the most prolific producers in the UK Hardcore scene with varied releases on Nukleuz, Switched On, Hardcore Collections, Relentless Vinyl, Master Wax to name a few, and of course his own Infexious Audio record label, which he setup with partner in crime DJ Impact.
Andy L – or Andy Littlewood’s musical career started while he was at school playing drums in the band Blackout. He won the 2002 UK Song writing Contest with his song “Think of Me”, and was a finalist in the 2003 Andelle Contest and the 2004 USA Songwriting Contest. He works alongside great vocalist's like Alison Wade, Toni Leo, Taya, Fraz, Malaya, Fran and Madi. Andy is currently one of the main songwriters for Reload and Konami Games in Japan. There you go!
AnnaGrace - Can you look trancy? I think you can and if you look at over pictures of AnnaGrace staring into the wilderness you’ll know what I mean. AnnaGrace is Belgium Annemie Coenen from the Ian Van Dahl project where she wrote lyrics and composed a number of the songs. Remember the haunting tracks like Castles in the Sky, Reason and Will I? She’s joined with Peter Luts also from Ian Van Dahl to form AnnaGrace which is one word.
AnnaGrace is a combination of Annemie’s first name Anna, in English and the English word which fascinated her as she was growing up “Grace”. Anna says she now experiences the new name AnnaGrace as if it were a new skin. Stand by for a contemporary new dance sound with a touch of those haunting sounds.
Answer42 – This Italian progressive group Answer42 from Venice serve up an elegant track with Pink Houses (2009) – it’s dreamy, drifty and has wonderful velvety female vocals. A class track.
Armand Van Helden - The self-styled ‘bad boy’ of house was bornin Boston in 1970 to an Indo (Dutch/Indonesian) father and a French-Lebanese mother, but travelled around the world as a child spending time in the Netherlands, Latvia, Turkey and Italy, as his father was a member of the U.S. Air Force. At the age of thirteen, he bought a drum machine and started DJing two years later.
Until he began branching out in 1996 with a barrage of album productions and remix classics (several of which were heard by more people than the originals), Armand Van Helden was one of the best-kept secrets in house music. Afterwards, he became one of the top names in dance music altogether.
Armin Van Bueren – When I think of Dutch producer and DJ Armin Van Bureen I just think consistency and the highest quality trance and progressive. The man has the ability to seek and out find the best. He is the benchmark. He’s also ranked #1 in DJ Mag's Top 100 in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Arnej – The first (and so far only) Canadian trace and progressive artist I’ve play on WeeKenDance is Anrej and he’s great. He came to my attention with Tomorrow Never Comes which I’ve featured on WeeKenDance. Arnej’s got a nice beat and soothing melodies that get trapped in your head. He was tipped as favourite producer of 2008 by Armin van Buuren, receiving a nomination for ‘Best New Face of 2008’ at the Trance Awards, pouring out as many as 10 quality singles that year. 2009 saw Arnej’s first vocal track and collaboration with Josie and Jaren, ‘Strangers We’ve Become’. So Arnej is going to be fixture on WeeKenDance moving forward.
ASA & S1 - Asa and S1's history stems well back before the ages of being able to go to raves or listen to dance music. At 6, Asa Robinson first started to take piano lessons, which soon progressed into organ and keyboard lessons. By 13 he was qualified enough to teach them all. Similarly, Si (Simon Withenshaw) used to play the piano at his local church along with the drums and even the guitar, and can now pick up any instrument and play it.
Si set up an event in his local town called Addiction, which is where he first met Asa, where their DJing careers started and then came producing his youthful passion trance.
The formidable pair received a call from raver's favourite Hixxy wanting to sign their happier tracks for a Bonkers mix. Racing ahead, 'Makin' Me Wanna Dance', was one of the biggest rave tracks of the year. It made it onto no less than five CDs, was played on rave floors around the world and even spawned it's own ring tone. Here comes one of fastest rising partnerships in UK Hardcore. Watch out Breeze and Styles!
ATB – German André Tanneberger is ATB. Whatever DJ rankings you look at – ATB is going to be toward the top. One of his earlier tracks “9pm (Till I Come)” was UK’s first trance Number 1 back in 1999. I just find with ATB you can sit back, close your eyes and be entertained. It’s been over a decade of sheer quality.
Aurora - 14 different artists share the name Aurora including a Danish death metal band, a Hungarian punk group, a Polish new wave group and a Chilean electronic project. I’m referring to a duo of English trance/dance producers, Sacha Collison & Simon Greenaway and vocalist Lizzy Pattinson. Credits include their Top 5 hit with "Ordinary World" - the Simon Le Bon endorsed trance-tinged Duran Duran cover, two cues that appeared in James Bond's "Tomorrow Never Dies" and their single "Dreaming" appeared in the trailer for the US No.1 box office Movie Dreamer. "Love Resurrection" featuring Amanda Wilson is their latest production to get everyone moving.
Axwell – Swedish producer Axel Christofer Hedfors or Axwell is just one of the great house music talents. I loved his single “I Found U”, it was clean, crisp, soulful and is a showcase of sounds of his skills. No surprise it topped every Dance Chart and went mainstream.
Judge Jules puts it best when he says “Too many producers get caught in a trademark groove, becoming a prisoner of their own perceived style. Axwell’s material is so varied, yet never fails to rock big time.”
When I heard “Open Your Heart”, I instantly loved it and have enjoyed featuring the track on WeeKenDance in 2009.
Bangbros - You could easily be excused for thinking Bangbros is a porn site and their new track Happy Hour with lyrics of little bang boys and bang girls does like to lead you to the fact they are Germany’s #1 Hands-on DJ team. Anyway, they have a nifty pumping sound. Their lyrics “All our lives we believe in the Happy Hour” is actually pretty astute – if you think about it we all look forward to those hour bursts in our life of things we really like! My daughter let me know it sounds like the Barbie Girl sound from Aqua. Can you believe that was 1997? That could be a WeeKenDance Classic Dance track! Hope to hear more from the Bangbros.
Barley – DJ Barley often works with the Big Daddy of Hardcore Stu Allan and some of his best tracks can be found on the Hardcore Adrenaline Series. Hardcore Adrenaline 3 is in my view a benchmark CD, powerful and sensational. One of the many great tracks is Barley with Stu Allan - Sensation.
Barry Diston - An attention to detail, brilliantly-produced and inventive tracks, and simply a knack for writing good, catchy music are the things causing Barry Diston to be the name on everyone’s lips. Barry first came to the forefront of the scene in 2002, when his debut track ‘DJs Do Pills’ got snapped up by Sundissential Records for a full release. His work rate is prolific, with over 60 releases under his belt from 2002-2008, making him one of the most hardworking producers in the UK.
Basic Desire – or Touch Of Eternity is an Australian duo that combines electronic sounds with some truly dynamic and melodic vocals. They specialize in power ballads and emotionally charged trance. Paulina Caine is a very talented and gorgeous vocalist/lyricist from Western Australia and is joined with Henry Kubik her unique electronic music composer, sound engineer and producer. It’s good to have Australian electronica rather than the soft rock we produce en masse.
BCD - Ultrabeat, Re-con, BCD –they’re all projects that have the sensational UK Producer, DJ and vocalist from Liverpool all over them – and I’m talking about Mike Di Scala. BCD also includes Lee Butler and Les Calvert. Their Remix of the title song of Simon and Garfunkel’s classic Bridge Over Troubled Water (which was Number 1 in 1970 and Grammy Award winner in 1971) is a fine dance tribute. Also involved in the track is Kenny Hayes or Clubstar.
Ben Preston - Ben Preston is a trance and progressive Producer/DJ based in the UK also known as “Second Left”, one half of the dance act “Tastemakers” and also one half of the “Soulmakers”.
He’s getting more and more coverage and for me his track “Why We Run” just puts him up there. It’s a blend of traditional bouncy dance mixed with vocal trance. It just grabbed me and I hope it does the same for you! Keep an ear open for Ben Preston in the future.
Benny Benassi – His music has been described as electro, sort of house-tec, dirty and cool, sweaty and smooth". He’s Italian Benny Benassi and he’s ravaged the dancefloors and dominated sales charts round the world with melodic dance music. Whenever I see an album with Benny I think Oh – I wonder what that’s going to sound like and zero in on his track.
Billy Daniel Bunter – or real name Daniel Light is one of the most awesome DJ’s on the world scene. He’s all over Helter Skelter, the undisputed leaders of the Hardcore scene. As he says, “I aint about the hype, I'm all about rockin the floor!!! No double his music does all the talking
BK – Legendary UK Hard House producer Ben Keen, is also the man behind the Riot! Record label. Riot! is the most critically acclaimed hard dance label around. Many will tell you BK is the most successful and prolific hard dance producer of all time. With worldwide dance chart hits like "Music Is Moving" (2003) and "Revolution" (2002), BK has reinvented the genre of hard house and breathed new life into the style. On WeeKenDance I’ve featured the 2009 Jakazid Remix of Revolution.
Bob Sinclar - Until only a few years ago, when you thought of global dance music hotbeds, you thought of New York, London, but Paris? Hardly. Then, in 1998, the worldwide smash "Gym Tonic" dropped on an unsuspecting world, featuring kitschy vocals sampled from a Jane Fonda workout tape and credited to Bob Sinclar, a shadowy figure said to be a "spy, jewel thief, Riviera playboy, mercenary, high-class gigolo, sunglass model, and hardcore porn star." Every guys dream really.
Despite the huge fuss, it turned out that Bob Sinclar was simply an assumed identity of Chris Lefriant, who adopted the name and persona of a character in an old French spy film. Raised in Le Marais, a bohemian and gay neighborhood of central Paris, Chris cut his nightlife teeth at legendary 80s discos like Le Palace. Today, Chris Lefriant and Bob Sinclar, it seems, are both at the peak of their dance music prowess.
Boom Jinx - Norwegian trance and progressive sensation Boom Jinx catch phrase is “hopefully more boom than jinx”
Boom Jinx aka Øistein Johan Eide started making music when he accidentally got his hands on an ancient audio sequencer for the Commodore Amiga Computer. By 2003, he had produced music for more than 50 commercials and his projects air on the TV, movies and radio every day.
What you’re going to hear is intricate detail and subtle nuances. His tracks are as good on the dance floor as they are in your headphones. I think this guy just leaves an impression. I love Sunrise with Oliver Smith.
Booty Callers - Lot of bands have plenty of aliases and I found a great track called “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” by Booty Callers on Clubland 14. When I dug around I found out it’s none other than Graham Turner and Mark Hall - who are of course those prolific producers/remixers Flip & Fill.
Their brand of commercial dance and trance has hit home with UK's clubbers and pop-buyers alike and they have developed a huge fan-base of people who appreciate what they do.
Booty Luv - are an English dance group formed in June 2007 via the Hed Kandi label. It’s fronted by R&B vocalists, Cherise Roberts and Nadia Shepherd, both of whom were in the original line-up of the successful hip hop band Big Brovaz. Their debut album peaked at #11 on the UK Album Chart and has so far spawned four big hits in the UK.
Brisby and Jingles – German Eurodance artists Dirk Waldt and Jörn Riebenstahl got together in 2000 to form the vocal trance project Brisby and Jingles. Their career started with tent-festivals in Ibiza, Canada and Monaco. With fresh sounds and great productions, Brisby and Jingles are guaranteed dance floor fillers.
True to their style, they created their own record company Andorfine Records. In 2004/2005 Andorfine made it to one of the fastest growing independent dance labels in europe releasing the debut singles from Cascada, Akira, DJ Stonie, Scarf, Klubbheroes, and many more.
Cahill - consists of Scott Rosser, Anton Powers & Tim Condran.
Scott has already had massive chart success in his previous band where they sold an amazing 4 million records worldwide. Nowadays he’s become a sought after Producer working with some of the biggest DJs in the country, recently remixing the Freemasons "Uninvited" (as Bailey & Rossko).
Anton Powers is one of the most popular DJ's on the northern club scene with residencies at top UK clubs and two key dance radio shows on Juice FM.
While Tim Condran along with Anton runs 3 Beat Blue Records (formerly Boss Records) & DJ's across the country as Cahill.
Vocals come in from Nikki Belle who is no stranger to the dance scene, already vocaling Mousse T - Horny / Whelan & Di Scala Sunset 2 Sunrise & Teardrops. And the smash "Trippin On You".
Calvin Harris - Calvin Harris is a Scottish singer, songwriter and record producer. His first album ‘I Created Disco’ was released in 2007 and featured up-tempo electroclash songs that were influenced by music from the 80s. To promote the album he supported Faithless and Groove Armada on tour.
I noticed him with “I’m not Alone” which was exclusively performed in Sydney on New Year’s Eve prior to its release in April 2009. It debuted in the UK Singles Chart at #1 on Easter Sunday on downloads alone.
Candee Jay - born Ilze Lankhaar is Dutch and multitalented being a singer, dancer and actor. In her own words "the dance music culture has become universal - it's colour-blind and brings people together from all nations. I love to see people party to my music, no matter where I go. I think it’s the best feeling in the world. Give me a beat and I start dancing". Sounds good and so does her first single “If I Were You”.
Carl Kennedy - One Of Manchesters Top Commercial and Funky House dj's Carl kennedy has been long established in the manchester and North West Area. He attracts more than 3,500 people to his gigs. His remix of Soul man’s Andrew Roachford Ride the Storm is a triumph!
Cascada - Following the sensational success at the World Music Awards 2007, Cascada rocketed to one of the most successful German acts worldwide. Cascada is Natalie Horler from Bonn/Germany and her team of producers are the very talented “hands-up” style Yanou and Manian.
Barely noticed at first, the released singles from their 2005 debut album "Everytime we touch" reached sales of over 3 million. "Everytime we touch" itself has been downloaded several million times in the US and belongs to the top 10 most downloaded tracks of all time.
Evactuate the Dancefloor in 2009 keeps Cascada right at the top.
Ceevox - Born in Newark and raised in the small port city of Elizabeth, New Jersey, CEEVOX or Clara Marens spent her childhood and teen years dreaming about one day becoming a singer and making her mark in this world doing what she knew best, music.
CEEVOX claims to have had the best teachers, from Sarah Vaughn to Donna Summer to Celia Cruz and credits her vocal training to years of mimicking radio artists. She has a signature magnitude to her voice and I’m just glad she does House and Dance music. Chelly – Listen to this. “When I was young, I didn’t play with dolls. I didn’t play with toys. I didn’t play with other kids. I was just singing.” Does this shy girl sound like a new dance sensation? Fortunately, Michelle Woolery from Brooklyn has a club-going, party-hopping altar ego. It’s called Chelley and it hit the world with “Took The Night”. With her singing range and playful side I can’t wait for more! DJ Chaos - Ted Critten is DJ Chaos who’s a hardcore DJ and producer from Grimsby/Cleethorpes, Northeast United Kingdom. His work is outstanding and I’ve particularly enjoyed Perfection Ft. Scarlet. He’s got new tracks out on Pure Hardcore and Hardcore Heaven 2009 – a must have album! Stay tuned for lots of great hardcore from DJ “Ted” Chaos.
Chicane - In the past he’s been dubbed "the godfather of the Ibiza anthem" but Chicane mastermind Nick Bracegirdle has come a long way since the sun drenched Balearic shores first throbbed to the sound of what is now recognised by many, as the archetypal chill out classic 'Offshore'.
The Chicane concept is one of a nomadic band which doesn't conform to the traditional approach of having a single lead singer, working instead with many different artists and producers. Stoned in Love in 2006, featuring the unmistakable voice of Tom Jones is a great example. These tracks and the myriad other classics were all brought together in October 2008 with the release of Chicane - Best Of (1996-2008). It’s a common mistake to think Nick’s a DJ – he’s actually the writer and producer within the band and the hub of all the live performances.
C.Kay – Hailing from Essex C.Kay specialises in upfront and classic Hardcore. He started DJing for a hobby, before bagging his own radio show on 'Lush FM', which was the biggest underground pirate radio station in Essex at the time. From Lush came a string of Hardcore bookings and his great track '5am' is featured on Hardcore Adrenaline 3.
CLSM - is the pseudonym of British Happy Hardcore producer Colin Meon aka Jon Doe. CLSM has contributed dozens of popular vinyl singles to the Hardcore music scene as well as full CDs. Known for his signature style remixes influenced from the KLF, Acen and early Rave Djs, Colin recently took a break from the music business to produce a 13 episode TV series dedicated to the dance scene called Undergroundtv.
Cosmic Gate - German Trance DJ's and Nic Chagall and Bossi are Cosmic Gate. These guys were a very popular Hard Trance duo and their latest sounds have evolved to take on a more progressive approach to Trance. You quickly experience their creativeness and hear why they are, one of the most highly sought after electronic music acts in the world.
Dana Rayne – Known as “the Voice” growing up, Dana Rayne would sing the National Anthem at every high school event. Born in Long Island, New York, this Italian American singer/songwriter’s single "Object Of My Desire" made a home on the UK charts, where it topped at 6 on the Top 40 Pop chart and 3 on the Top 40 UK Club Chart. Dana is also known as the new member of the multi platinum group La Bouche, singing all of La Bouche’s hits including “Be My Lover” and “Sweet Dreams” just to name a few. She knocked me for six in 2009 with a great Happy Hardcore track Make It on My Own.
Dance Nation - Dance Nation are a hot act from the Netherlands consisting of two young talented artists Kim & Sean. Kim V’s a gorgeous singer who showed awesome singing talent at the tender age of 5! She joins Sean to make Dance Nation who apparently have a great live show. Starting early like Kim, Sean Baker was practically born on the stage as a dancer before his ambition led him developing his singing & production talent. Sunshine 2009 is just an awesome vocal trance track.
Dancing DJs - Formed in 1998 off the back of the craze for mash-up dance remixes on the UK club scene, Scott Page & Harry Hard quickly gained a name for themselves not only for their mash-ups but their DJing. The name they gave the crowd at that club eventually became the name they gave themselves (The Friday Night Posse).
Their "Dancing DJs" style fits the UK "scouse house" scene, while many "Friday Night Posse" mixes have crossed-over to hardhouse/hard dance/trance crowds.
Daniel Hoppe - Daniel Hoppes’ set is well-known for unrestrained house and progressive sounds, paired with a strong electrical note! This combination, as well as his feeling for new trends, is the key to his legendary DJ Gigs!
He achieved international attention with his first production "Gipsy", and many of the remixes were real sensations and caused an incredible hype. Love and Pride 2005 was also big. "Star" released in 2008 is one of samplers on Germany's Next Topmodel. Now that’s a show I’d like to see!
Danni Minogue - Performing has always been in Danni Minogues' blood, though even in her wildest dreams she never imagined her life would turn out the way it has. Brought up on Abba and Olivia Newton John in Melbourne, Australia, there was a lot of jumping around the lounge room at home singing into a hairbrush.
"We didn't really have dance music on the radio in Australia," Dannii explains – tell me about it. Then I had my track, Baby Love, remixed by Steve Hurley [renowned house music producer who has worked with the likes of Madonna and Michael Jackson]. That was the first thing I did that was really cool and my love of dance music and clubbing started from there.
It wasn't until 2001, though, that Dannii really realised her musical potential and started to find her feet in the notoriously hard-to-crack dance world. After forging a friendship with Pete Tong, the superstar DJ asked Dannii to sing on the track Who Do You Love Now? The single went on to sell a phenomenal 200,000 copies and enter the UK charts at number 3. It was all the encouragement Dannii needed to start writing properly. Now writing and producing is the biggest part of what she does. The results wowed the music world, including America. Danny Byrd – Seen as a pioneer of soulful and vocal liquid funk, Danny Byrd from Bath in the South West of England is a Drum and Base master. His sound is fresh and you hear garage shifts, a classic dance piano sound which I adore, power riffs, soulful vocals and high contrasts. The best example of this is his 2010 Remix of Liquid's Sweet Harmony. This track has it all and it’s got him on the map. Dabruck & Klein – It might sound obvious but it’s refreshing when musicians have their catchcry as “It’s about music!” You quickly get the feeling those behind it have the right attitude and that’s the case with Dabruck & Klein. These guys have a shared understanding of getting the right sound and have a nose for the party vibe. Just listen to “The Feeling” and you’ll experience “It’s about Music”. Darren Styles - Darren Styles started DJ-ing in the world of underground Hardcore at just 16. He started producing and writing tracks with Paul Force in 1993, rapidly becoming two of the biggest names on a new scene which was just beginning. They were the first hardcore DJ’s to produce a Mix for Pete Tong’s Essential Mix on Radio One. They gained awards as best producers, best DJ’s and best tracks in numerous Hardcore Awards.
In 1999 Darren teamed up with, another up and coming hardcore DJ, Mark Breeze and together they formed Styles & Breeze, again receiving huge acclaim in the hardcore world.
Late 2006 saw Darren make a clean sweep at the Hardcore Awards, winning Best DJ, Best Producer and Save Me won single of the year.
This was followed up by retaining his title of Best DJ at the 2007 Awards.
His album in 2008 SkyDivin has gone straight to my essential library and has extensively been featured on WeeKenDance. My favourite tracks are Getting Better, I Need You, Baby I’ll let U know and Tell Me – they are all awesome. It’s a must buy album. Dash Berlin – A WeeKenDance fan Dave, sent me a link saying “hey Ed check out this track – what do ya think for weekendance”. I replied “mate a WeeKenDance Hit Alert” – that’s how I discovered Dash Berlin.
Dutchman Dash has definitely created a “Dash Berlin Trance Sound”. It’s futuristic, scintillating, but above all, moving and emotive music that gets you inside. You’ll hear plenty of Dash Berlin on WeeKenDance because they’re pushing out winners. Darwin (aka Deeper Territory) - was first thrust upon the hardcore community via the Gammer remix of "Take A Ride", done with Ant Johnson and he hasn't stopped gaining momentum since. Darwin is pushing through into the wider hardcore mainstream consciousness without in any way compromising his underground sensibilities and range – which all means it sounds unique and compelling. H’es got plenty of great tracks, Come one Out and Tonight are favourites of mine played on WeeKenDance.
David Guetta - The French superstar DJ David Guetta is also a multi-million selling producer, recording artist and promoter. He’s got a rare talent of being able to move hearts and minds on the dance floor and the Top 40. He puts it this way “For me, it is all about sharing my passion with people. A lot of producers, they don’t think it’s cool to play for people. But even in the studio I love to play for my friends.” I’m with you David, I love sharing my music too.
De-Grees – De-Grees is the latest project by Dance-professionals Ti-Mo, Stefan Rio & Marco Juliano who have rocked German clubs for years. They only came together at the end of 2005 and no-one could have anticipated the success. Their single Apologize was an immediate hit blazing up the dance charts. They are in the German Yawa Recordings stable with other great dance artists such as Real Booty Babes, Playa’z, Ekowraith, Kindervater, Picco and Verano. They’re a regular feature on WeeKenDance as they pump out such good high energy tracks. Deadmau5 – He’s a hell of a good Progressive producer – our Canadian Dead Mouse. You’ll see his title as Deadmau5 which comes from an incident where a mouse crawled into Joel Zimmerman's computer. Dead mouse was too long for a site login name so he abbreviated it to be "Deadmau5". His sounds are great and his awards and nominations rightfully growing.
Delinquent – is Mike Panteli and Philip Omo and they’ve worked hard at establishing themselves as a prominent force in the new-breed of UK Dance Producers resulting in their undisputable title of "Bassline Godfathers".
Formed in 1999, Delinquent adapted quickly to the requirements of the music industry and after a lot of hard work and dedication, were remixing for major record labels at the tender age of 18. Now they’re sweeping clubland and commercial radio. Deep Nights – Well I don’t feature many Mexican trance artists on WeeKenDance but Jorge Nava or Deep Nights is one of the fastest growing talents in the International dance scene. Focusing on progressive trance, this youngster (18 in 2010) could end up anywhere. Already he’s got support from the best like Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz, Paul Van Dyk, Roger Shah and plenty more.
His track “Escape” displays a maturity, a track that has arrived and hits the senses so effectively. It’s progressive trance at its best.
DHT – The Belgian sensations DHT ft the great young singer Edmee. Flor Da Rick Theeuwes is the MC/DJ/writer/producer of the Duo. D.H.T.’s single, Listen to Your Heart reached the Top 5 in pop radio play in the United States something no other Belgian act had done in the prior thirteen years. The last being Technotronic in the early 1990s – remember them? DHT have haunting compelling vocals with an uplifting style guaranteed to make you dance – like we do here on WeeKenDance
Digital Rush – See Ultimate Devotion
DJ Disciple - To try to categorize DJ Disciple is pointless, such is his diverse talent. Happily surging between dance music genres, he's the only DJ in New York that plays music for both the traditional and trendy scenes. His UK profile is legendary, working in more clubs than any American DJ. For the past 12 years, Disciple played in at least fifty clubs a year and his travels are documented on www.djdisciple.com.
With his music and DJ performances known all over the world, it’s been Disciple’s voice that’s become the catalyst for amazing dance music. The voice behind ’Work it out’, ‘Changes’, ‘Rise up’ and ‘Destination’ had him nominated for 2008 Beatport artist of the year.
DMO - Donna Marie has been involved in music from an early age and always knew it was what she would do as a career. She’s worked her way through singing in working men’s clubs performing covers versions in pubs with her guitar, playing in a number of bands and now works alongside some of the best DJ/Producers and record labels in the world. Donna also co-writes the tracks and produces all of her own vocal work. Some of her biggest tracks to date have been with the legendary Scott Brown.
Donna Grassie - The very versatile Donna Grassie has been performing since 1988. When she isn't performing she juggles her creative time around her son. Appearing in great dance tracks, she has performed at the London Paladium and various other venues throughout the UK and Ireland. Lucky for some! Her track with SMS It’s Amazing is just that - a fresh amazing sound.
Dream Dance Alliance – See Sven Greiner Edward Maya - Romanian Edward Maya didn’t learn his trade from a Dance Music For Dummies Guide. He’s a graduate of the Bucharest Conservatory and at 19 composed a song which came 4th at the Eurovision Song Contest 2006. That fast tracked his career.
His first release “Stereo Love” reached #2 in the Romanian singles charts. And after a while it became a global club hit with over 40 million YouTube views in 8 months.
Ekowraith - So I find this energy packed track called “Booming Track” in 2008 and I really like it, I pump it up and love it. It’s by a guy Ekowraith who I’ve never heard of and I find out he’s a 15 year old Porter Robinson from the US and I’m blown away. Already a genius in producing crazy sounds and arrangements, he’s now in the YAWA recordings stable with the likes of Real Booty Babes, Playa’z, Kindervater, Picco and Verano. I think his career is poised to take off. Empire of the Sun – It’s such a pleasure to play quality Australian Dance music on WeeKenDance. The electronic duo Empire of the Sun debut album “Walking on a Dream” produced a great track by the same name but it was “We Are The People” that got my attention. With a clear, crisp and fresh House sound it’s done well in the UK and Europe and no surprise better overseas than in Australia. Ephexis - Ephexis started writing music together in 2001. Fired by a passion for pushing the boundaries of freeform dance music, they’ve spent a huge amount of time in studios creating and refining their unmistakable harder sound. It’s a psychedelic trip they’ve taken to the world in an explosive live show, and they haven’t ignored us here in Australia.
Eric Smax – Every time I listen to a house track from Germany’s Eric Smax I find myself drawn in. Unlike many other artists with a signature sound, his tracks all have a unique edge. His attitude is of experimenting with sound. Eric sums it up best “You need to have the instincts of a streetsoccer player. Creative thinking, open to new ideas and sometimes base decisions on a gut level rather than on a mind level." That’s the reason why known DJs like DJ Delicious, Aaron Smith or Soul Seekerz refine their tracks with remixes by Eric Smax. He’s done a great job with Lady GaGa’s Just Dance. I love must be the Music with Terri B and Rising Sun. Fabio XB – He used to be known as Alex Bartlett but Fabietto is now called Fabio XB which is pretty cool. But how nice a name is Fabietto? He rose to club anthem stardom with “Amnesia” in 2001 and he’s just a great electro trance producer. I’m taken with his 2010 track “Make This Your Day”. It highlights his music and technology passion and this track takes you to lots of places.
Fedde Le Grand - Rare breeds like Fedde Le Grand are few and far between, and so when someone like this comes along it’s right that the world sits up and listens. He’s a Dutchman blessed with such talent that keeping up to speed with what he does is a task in itself. It could be said Fedde came out of nowhere, riding off the success of a hit record. Well, to set the record straight this couldn’t be further from the truth. Le Grand has spent the majority of his earlier youth grafting, spinning records in his Native country and cutting tracks until the inevitable happened. Put your hands up for Detroit was produced in the bedroom, released by one of the biggest labels in dance, and it enabled Fedde to step out into the world of Electronic Dance.
His abilities in the studio are endless. Together with his good friend and production partner Funkerman, they’ve churned out some immaculate material that has slotted into an absolute cross section of fellow DJs.
Ferry Corsten - The Dutch Ferry Corsten has consistently been voted one of the top 10 DJs in the world. The man’s been called the “architect, pioneer, and instigator” of trance music’s global dominance. His style is so singular that synthesizer manufacturer Roland commissioned a Corsten sound bank for their SP-555 sampling unit. First State – There’s so much exciting Trance and Progressive that I feature on WeeKenDance and the talent extraordinary. It doesn’t get much better that Sander van Dien or First State. He’s growing to be one of the most influential Trance and Progressive acts across the globe. His track Brave featuring Sarah Howells on vocals is monumental. Its crisp, builds up beautifully, has a unique bass line, magical harmonies and you are drawn right in to what is a genuine progressive journey.
Flip ‘n’ Fill - Mark Hall and Graham Turner began working together many years ago and have had hit singles independently and together under a few different guises before the success they have achieved with Flip 'n' Fill.
Their brand of commercial dance / trance has hit home with UK's clubbers and pop-buyers alike and they have developed a huge fan-base of people who appreciate what they do.
Fracus – Real name Gary Powell started DJing on a pirate UK radio station called Dimension FM in 1999. He broke into the hardcore scene in 2002 with tracks like 'Forever with me' and 'Shine'. Today he is firmly established as one of the leading 'New Breed' UK Hardcore artists appearing on almost every compilation album at one time or another.
Interesting he took almost a year away from producing dance music to finish studying a Music Technology Degree and he was back with a vengeance in 2005. He works extensively with firmly established singer/songwriter Lisa Abbott and her voice can be heard on many of his vocal productions.
Fragma – Toca’s Miracle is just a classic and the kids of my kids will be enthralled by future distant remixes of the track. But it’s confusing. The reason is that it’s a mash up of German Fragma’s first single "Toca Me" (which I think is Spanish for Touch Me) and the vocals from Coco Star's 1997 song "I Need a Miracle" over the top. What isn’t confusing is how compelling this song is and no surprise it reached #1 in the UK in 2000 and #8 in Australia. But it’s the Darren Styles Hardcore Remix of Toca’s Miracle that’s my favourite. 2009 has seen “Memory” which is just fantastic. Fragma was founded in 1998 by brothers Dirk and Marco Duderstadt who now also work as Duderstadt and we’ve played lots of their stuff on WeeKenDance.
Franky Tunes – is Frank Fritze and he’s huge in Germany. Franky Tunes has also been producing music under the Pseudonym Topmodelz. Add Franky + Charly Lownoise and you have Starsplash which had that great hit in 2002 Free (free as bird). Prince of Love released late 2007 is a beauty.
Freemasons – The Freemasons are a Dance/House/Electronica production team from England. The act consists of DJ/Producer/composer/remixers Russell Small (who is also one half of the House production duo Phats & Small) and James Wiltshire (who also works with Phats & Small but under the alias Jimmy Gomez).
The duo is well known for using samples and loops from classic Dance and Disco songs and blending it in with the new sounds of today contemporary Dance genres. The name is taken from the Brighton pub Freemasons which they frequent. They have enjoyed 4 Consecutive Top twenty UK Artist Singles and are UK’s most successful (Grammy Nominated) Remixers.
Funkerman - Many love affairs start off in the bedroom, whether it’s Madonna, Britney, Justin or KISS adorning our walls, those early years in the dark depths of our teenage privacy can be some of the most important and formative. That was certainly the case for Dutchman Ardie van Beek, or Funkerman as he’s now known around the world.
But it wasn’t plastic pop bunnies that enamoured a young Funkerman, it was the heroes of the US hip-hop explosion that inspired him to take to the turntables and begin a journey into the very soul of funk and later House music.
Learning the ins and outs of the business, he teamed up with friend Raf and fellow Dutch DJ/producer Fedde le Grand to create Flamingo Recordings, a house and electronic-tech label that is one of the hottest imprints in the world. Funkerman’s tracks Speed Up and The Girls are a couple of beauties that we’ve played lots of WeeKenDance.
Future Freakz - Fast becoming renowned as a two part tour de force and being responsible for creating quite possibly some of the most driving House music in clubland – I’m introducing you to the energetic production and DJ partnership of Russell Biles and Vince Nysse (Nay-C) aka the Future Freakz!
These boys with a passion and love for all things House have a handful of smash remixes already under their belts, a residency with one of London's rising star club brands and some of the biggest names in clubland charting their tracks. I’ve featured Happiness Sound De Zign and A Week Ago on WeeKenDance and with quality sounds like these let’s hope Future Freakz will continue to produce driving uplifting House music for us to enjoy.
Gammer - One half of Hardcore duo Dougal & Gammer and Essential Platinum's second in command, Gammer or Matthew Lee has quickly risen from complete obscurity to become part of the top tier of UK Hardcore with his intelligent writing and well produced tracks. Receiving the Breakthru DJ award for 2005 finally affirmed his position as the future of Hardcore.
Gareth Emery – 2008 was a big year for trance and progressive artist Gareth Emery. After his critically acclaimed debut on the BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix and rise to number 23 in the definitive DJ Mag Top 100 Poll, Gareth Emery established himself as one of the most innovative, unique, and exciting figures in modern dance music. You’ll hear lots of his world-class chart topping productions on WeekenDance.
Geos Crew – Geos aka DJ Robbo and MC Marley have been producing great sounds from the south coast of the UK since 2002, combining live performances and rip roaring releases. The live performances combine DJ sets from both Marley & Robbo plus an MC performance from Marley. Marley's tracks have appeared on BBC Radio One, Galaxy FM, Bonkers, Ministry of Sound and Helter Skelter vs Raindance Albums, True Hardcore and of course Australia’s Best Dance Radio Show WeeKenDance!
Girls Aloud - Could a reality TV Show create a great band by picking the best individual contestants – you wouldn’t think so but British girl group Girls Aloud was effectively created by ITV1 talent show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002. The completely manufactured group, consisting of Cheryl Cole Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh, has become one of the most successful British pop groups of the decade, with a record-breaking 18 consecutive Top 10 singles (including three number ones) and five platinum albums (including a number one).
Girls Aloud hold the record for the shortest time between formation and reaching number one in the UK Charts – 3 weeks. Guinness World Records lists them as "Most Successful Reality TV Group" in the 2007 edition.
I’ve played a lot of their songs on WeeKenDance and admit I fell in love with Call the Shots. Glenn Morrison - A teenage classical piano competition winner, Glenn Morrison beautifully combines his skill as a DJ with the craft of writer and producer. His eclectic taste for all things considered “proper club house music” sees him in a variety of sound bases. From grainy screeching acid lines to lush ethereal progressive, he does it well with an ear for quality. In 2010, I played “Another Suggestion” on WeekenDance which is an enthralling track that fires up the emotions. Ham - From leaving school at 16, Ham went straight into writing tracks with Kniteforce records under the guidance of label owner Luna-C. In late 1996, Ham then formed the record label Next Generation Records with partner in crime DJ Brisk. The label created an immediate impact on the scene and produced some of the late 90's biggest Hardcore anthems. Most recent accomplishments include acclaimed vocal tracks under his guise Eclipse including "24/7" and "Be Happy".
Heaven 7 - Heaven 7 was formed in 2005 by producer Mike Euphony and vocalist Vicky Fee. Mike and Vicky have a unique writing style and a sound that can't be compared to anyone else either. Together they’re responsible for the creation of numerous hardcore anthems such as This Life, Dance with Me, Speak of Love, Kontact DJ and many more.
The HEAVEN 7 live show is guaranteed to blow the roof off any event and incorporates an ableton live set (a software sequencer designed around the notion of being as much an instrument for live performances as a tool for composing and arranging), unheard mixes of their tunes and live vocals. And they don’t mime or play to a backing track. Sounds good.
Hixxy - ascended to the elite class of happy hardcore DJs in the late '90s, mixing several entries in React's Bonkers series, releasing his tracks on his own Essential label, and spinning at many of the U.K.'s biggest happy hardcore events. Hixxy is perhaps best-known for his "Toytown" single, one of happy hardcore's most popular anthems. In 1996 the Massive Bonkers series was born, the third instalment went silver and is the biggest selling Hardcore series ever.
H “Two” O - 2007 will be remembered as the year bassline ((sub genre of UK Garage) topped the charts and 2008 is the year it will dominate! Hailing from Leicester, producers 'H 'two' O' have teamed up with Manchester vocalists 'Platnum' to create the club anthem 'What's It Gonna Be'
Hyper Deejays - Hyper Deejays consists of 3 producers from the Blackburn area of Lancashire. The guys are Kyle Harvey or (DJ Kyle RV), Michael Jackson (DJ Jacko) and Phil Stevenson (DJ Slam). They got into the Bouncy house scene at an early age and have wanted to become a part of it ever since. Well they’re certainly there and going from strength to strength.
I first noticed them with the Jakazid remix of Don’t Stop Moving which is a fast moving treat which I have played lots on WeeKenDance. If you love this track check out their music on myspace – I love it and figure I’ll being playing heaps in the future.
DJ In Effect - When hardcore godfather DJ Hixxy tags you “the next big breakthrough artist”, you know you’re doing something right. DJ In Effect, Paul Bevan is already riding high on huge collaborations with Dougal, Gammer, Breeze and Impact and has also impressed many with his solo productions. Never one to sit still stylistically, his approach draws from a broad palette of hardcore with streaks of gabber or extreme, twisted and insane hardcore techno. A bit like Happy Hardcore without the Happy.
Infernal – The Danish duo Infernal is Lina Rafn and Paw Lagermann and they are Denmark's No. 1 dance/pop band export. Their major hit "From Paris to Berlin", the title track from the bands third album, conquered the number one position on the Danish club charts and placed Infernal on the world map.
With immense passion and personality, their songs put into words the fantastic, and yet also highly emotional stage in their lives that Infernal are at, at the time of writing their songs.
JAKAZiD - is the nickname of 19-year-old (2008) dance music producer, remixer and DJ, Josh McInnes. Since an early age Josh was obsessed with dance music so it was only natural for him to want to start producing it himself.
JAKAZiD's entrance into the hardcore scene in January '07 was via a TV cleaning commercial with sampling wizardry that lasted no longer than 2 minutes. The commercial/song, namely "Cillit Bang" (an English cleaning product), became so ubiquitous and notorious that hard-dance label Nukleuz Records saw it’s potential and officially licensed the track with cult hero Barry Scott's infectious vocals! The online YouTube video racked up millions of views. His career is one to watch and he’s pumping them out. Absolutely, he has the best Remix of the Kay Perry hit “I Kissed a Girl”.
J Majik – Drum and Bass and Jungle are the music of Jamie Spratling or J Majik who hails from Northwood, England. Jamie released his first track as early as 1992 (as DJ Dextrous) on the Planet Earth record label. By 1994, he had changed his stage name to the current moniker J Majik due to the fact that there was already another DJ Dextrous within the scene! Today he runs his own label Infrared.
I like the track Crazy World which he’s done with Wickaman or Andy Parsons. Lots of different remixes of the track and it’s a really good one.
Jason Nevins - Not only is Jason Nevins one of the crowned kings of the remix & production game, he’s one of the early pioneers of the DanceRock sound. Just listen to his mixes of Duran Duran, Rob Thomas, Kelly Clarkson, Amber, N.E.R.D. or Anastacia. If you listen to any sort of dance or pop music then it’s a sure bet you’ve heard of some of Jason's productions. A talented producer and remixer, Jason’s name became ubiquitous and it seems everyone wants to receive his "Midas touch".
Johan Gielen – Your guarantee of the finest trance with great vocal mixes is Johan Gielen. His music is as charismatic as his bright blonde hair, he’s a superstar and referred to as one of the Dutch Ambassadors of Dance. His 2009 album Private Party – is a must with so many quality tracks like My Love, Disappear, Cold Winds and with Kid Massive – Let Yourself. You’ll here them all on WeeKenDance. John Dahlback – Swede John Dahlback is breaking through with a compelling tech House sound. He’s also making his mark as a producer. “Out & There” is a great example of his sound and let’s hope we see lots of John Dahlback “Out & There” in the future.
Joy ‘N Pain – A great new UK Garage band to watch is Joy ‘N Pain. The pair is Dezz Jones & JC and they formed in 2008. They’ve already got a single in the works with a major label and remixes for AATW & Ministry of Sound under their belts. They’re going places. Just go to their MySpace page and you’ll hear great sounds including Read My Lips which has been unsigned all year (2009) but I think it’s their best track.
Justice – Justice is a grammy nominated electronic Parisian dance production duo comprised of Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay. They are one of the frontrunners of a genre of electronic music known as elektro or elektro-punk. Justice generated international buzz with "D.A.N.C.E.," a catchy single whose video and MP3 spread like wildfire across the Internet in summer 2007. Initially trend-setting Internet bloggers were quick to champion the song, in particular its video, which featured animated T-shirts. Vice Records helped fan the flames, posting numerous MP3 remixes for free download on its blog. That’s one way to make a grand entrance.
Justice is aka Cross because of a lighted crucifix they have on stage and the The Cross is their logo. Xavier says, “Eighty percent of France is Christian. My Dad was a bit uncertain and thought it was bad taste, but I was like, this is what I want to do Dad.
Karen Danzig - For many years her main singing job was on a dinner-dance Cruise boat on the River Thames, singing jazz, musical theatre & pop with a band. She got fired one evening when the captain let her sail the boat with all the passengers onboard! She also worked as a lap dancer in London, but for one night only!! Now she is appearing all over the dance music scene often scoring multiple tracks on great compilation albums like Clubland and Helter Skelter. She is sensational.
Kate Ryan - "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, Alive are the words Kate Ryan is using to describe her new Album. At the World Music Awards she won the award of best selling “Benelux artist worldwide”. She sings in both French and English and I tend to like her dance tracks which are in French more. No doubt she’s a star with her tracks conquering dance charts worldwide. In 2006, she was selected to represent Belguim in the Eurovison Song Contest where she was unexpectedly knocked out in the semi-finals, many say controversially, singing "Je t'adore" JUH-TA-DOOR (I adore You). Je t'adore went on to be a hit. I really like her hits Voyage Voyage and Ella Elle.
K-Cat - When you hear of an artist that sings and song writes the reaction is usually one of interest and amazement but what would the reaction be if you found out the singer/songwriter also produces too! K-Cat, spelled K-Cat is a performing artist with plenty to offer just listen to My Destiny with Delinquent.
Hailing from North London, she’s dazzled audiences since the tender age of 13, always stealing the show at local talent contests and showcases. She became well known within the Filipino community throughout her teens as the young starlet, delivering power ballads effortlessly at festivals and beauty pageants.
She has a beautiful ethereal voice, together with her vibrant sound, taking the listener on an interesting journey.
Kelly Rowland - They say that change can be a good thing. Just ask Kelly Rowland, a founding member of Destiny's Child, the top-selling female recording group of all-time, and a best-selling Grammy-winning solo artist in her own right.
Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Rowland began singing as soon as she heard the vocal beauty of Whitney Houston. She was only four at the time, but Houston's 1985 self-titled debut was enough to motivate the little girl. Performances with the church choir followed, but Rowland's developing interest in music blossomed when she and her family moved to Houston, TX. She befriended another inspiring singer, Beyoncé Knowles, and the two became fast friends.
Today’s Kelly's natural charm and charisma have opened up the doors to roles in movies and on television on top of her musical gift. Kismet – When the man Armin Van Buuren says someone is a person to watch you take notice. That’s what he’s said about Kismet or Andrew Bennett. In early 2010 he hit us with “The Roll” and what you’ll hear is absolute quality from his hard work and dedication. Keep an eye on his new releases.
KUTA - Reigning from sunny Oldham in Wales, Mike Lewis got a taste for DJ'ing in the mid-eighties when a friend asked him to help carry his gear for a mobile disco!
At the beginning of the 90's he became involved in producing and writing tunes on the underground scene in the Northwest of England with band Quartech which later became N-Trance. Of course, N-Trance had the biggest selling dance record of 1995 “Set You Free” selling 580,000 copies & reaching number 2 in the UK charts.
The name chang to KUTA came from Mike’s various meetings with club managers, who when asked what their club needed, would say a Kick Up The Arse – acronym KUTA! Kyau & Albert - Ralph Kyau and Steven Moebius Albert are two fantastic trance producers and DJs from Germany known as Kyau & Albert.
In 2000, they became recognized by WEA (which is part of Warner Music), got a long contract and the dance music journey really began with huge support from DJs such as Paul van Dyk, KayCee, DJ Tiesto and many others.
Full of awards and praise, these guys must spend a lot of time in airport lounges as they perform all around the world. They wrapped a fantastic 2009 with “I Love You” which showcases a raft of sounds and can only be described as beautiful and a delight for the ears – it’s one of those tracks where late a night, you’re tired and winding down, you turn the lights off with your trance buddy and bond over this track. Try it! In 2010 I just loved “Once in a Life Time” and it stirred those feelings all over again. Lara McAllen – The singer, songwriter and actress Lara McAllen was voted the Sexiest Euro-Dance Music Artist in the World by Internet Users. She was originally featured as a guest vocalist and later joined the group Angel City as the lead singer. If you haven't heard of Lara maybe you've heard of her hit singles 'Love Me Right', 'Touch Me', 'Do You Know (I Go Crazy)', 'Sunrise' and ‘Bodyrock’ .
Lara has produced with the likes of like Jason Nevins, Rob Davis and Armin Van Buuren. She’s also presented for various TV shows and has appeared in many 'Lads' Mags including Loaded, Maxim, Nuts and Zoo Magazine.
Lasgo - Vocal Euro-trance act Lasgo is one of the most successful Belgian dance acts both in Belgium and abroad. Lasgo consists of Peter Luts (producer, keyboard player), David Vervoort (producer, keyboard player, singer) and originally Evi Goffin (frontwoman, singer) but now replaced by 18 year old Jelle Van Dael (2008).
A night hawk dedicated to dance music Jelle says “I have no intention to go prancing about half naked on the stage but I have no objections to be considered sexy” - neither do we. To the question of how Jelle feels about her new career she makes reference to her first Lasgo single “Out of My Mind”.
Lazy Jonez - was born 1976 in Germany. He started making music at the early age of 6 with a simple musical Keyboard. After this, he changed to computers and started with C64.
The C64 later lead to the Commodore Amiga in 1987. He founded an Amiga Music-Group and went on to release over 500 Amiga Mods / Remixes created within Soundtracker & Protracker.
What this all means, is by the time the PC came around this guy was already a genius.
Fast forward to today, listen to Herbick & Lazy Jones Ft Terri B – I Got a Feeling and you have a monster trance track! I’ll be playing this one on WeeKenDance for years.
Liz Kay - “As long as my music moves people positively in one way or another, I am happy!” says Liz Kay born in the Netherlands as Eliza Krul (now that sounds dutch) in a little town called Delft. In 2005 Liz met whizzes Yanou & Manian in Germany, the producers of the very successful dance act Cascada. Liz has toured with Cascada which must have been a blast. She came to my attention with her great first track “When Love Becomes a Lie” and next with To France. The Remix of the Classic New Order track “True Faith” is also worth checking out. Put your money down on Liz Kay, I expect she’ll have an amazing career.
Lou Lou - In 2004, Lou Lou became the voice of the Hardcore anthem Makin Me Wanna Dance. With a passion for dance music from an early age she was soon recognised as a fresh voice in the UK hardcore scene and worked with several different producers on tracks such as REACH OUT, CRAZY, WALK AWAY and HAPPINESS with DJ's Hixxy And Darren Styles.
It wasn't long before dance floor legends SY & UNKNOWN recognised her vocal and song writing potential and signed her exclusively to QUOSH RECORDS.
Lou Lou boasts a QUOSH back catalogue of tracks she has written, sung and can be seen entertaining huge crowds on stages around the globe. Lovers Electric – Anything that sounds like dance music from Australia gets me excited. This hardworking band from Adelaide “Lovers Electric” has got a nice electro sound going. They’ve been going to where the action is London, North of England and the US. They scored with MTV using a number of their songs, including "Closer" in the TV series The Hills.
They did a sold-out support European tour with reformed band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) – remember them. They must have had fun and learnt heaps.
I really like their track “Could This Be” and “Honey” ended up on the 2009 Ministry of Sound Annual which is pretty cool.
Mandala Bros – German Trance group featuring Sven Greiner, Torsten Stenzel which means they’re not brothers at all. Sven is also know as DJ Shog who producers lots of great trance tracks.
Manian - is without doubt one of the most successful Dance-producers worldwide. An excerpt of his projects reads like the Who’s Who of the German Dance-scene including Cascada, currently the world’s most successful Dance-project. Manian creates his tracks in his own studio since 2002, delivered loads of brilliant remixes for international artists and also founded his own label Zooland Records with his partner Yanou in 2005. Markus Schultz - Originally from Germany, Melodic Trance and Progressive DJ and Producer, Markus Schulz moved to the United States at 13 and become engrossed in the break-dancing scene of the time. Although a talented mover and groover on the floor, a chance to dominate the decks at a breaks party was the moment that shifted his life’s work – and we’re the big winners. He delivers hit after hit, is America’s no.1 club DJ and I have to admit I’m drawn to a Markus Schultz release like a bear to honey and the result is always so sweet!
Martijn de Vries - Born in Holland in the late 70's Martijn de Vries grew up with the dream of making dance music one day. When the era of electronic house really hit it off in the early nineties he bought his first synthesizer and started to make his first tunes.
His first record was released quietly on an independent Dutch label. The second 12inch, which later became known as "the Bronx - Wet Like The Rain", really hit it off. The single reached # 1 in the German Dance charts and stayed there for several weeks and was signed to big labels across Europe.
He started Elevated Music early 2002 and has in-house projects like Keira Green, Sam G and Katie Jewels which has one of my favourite tracks Burning Love. He’s written and/or produced vocals for Pulsedriver, 4Strings, Starsplash, Rob Mayth, Franky Tunes and Pinball to name a few. Master Blaster - Master Blaster is a German electronic/trance project formed by “hands up” trance producer Sascha van Holt in collaboration with trance DJ and producers Rico Bernasconi and Mike De Ville. Crazy melodies, fun lyrics – anything they touch becomes “hands up” and just lifts the energy. Matt Darey – Matt Darey started back in 1992 and he’s one of the pioneers of today’s dance scene. Flogging over 2 million albums and singles – what a major influence he’s been on top DJ’s like Oakenfold, Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Above & Beyond and many more.
Matt Darey’s a chameleon of sound, producing everything from breaks to house to trance and progressive and was responsible for some of the pinnacle tracks and top ten chart hits to come from the scene.
One of his great projects is “Urban Astronauts” which fuses rock influences with electronic dance music.
Melanie Flash - US performer Melanie Flash grew up in a very religious home, and while reluctant to let her pursue her dream of a career in the volatile world of music and entertainment business, her parents decided that her God given talent shouldn’t be denied.
Her first energetic fist pumping dance release Halfway to Heaven suggests it isn’t going to be her last! Megara Vs DJ Lee – The two Hamburgers (that’s boys from Hamburg Germany) Megara and DL Lee just seem to have fun with trance landing high quality addictive energy tracks -which is what we want on WeeKenDance. Their track “I Want You” has got it all and every time I play it I feel some different emotion which is what it’s all about isn’t it? Micha Moor – “A Shooting Star” on the international electro house scene, Micha Moor creates wonderful music. He passionately blends house and electronic sounds with skilful use of loops and A Capella’s. The result is a moving sound that is utterly his own. I love “Space” from 2006 and 2010s “Time to Fly”. Michael Mind Project - In late 2009, the Michael Mind Project evolved as collaboration with producer Francois Sanders (that’s "Frank" Sanders from Sunloverz) and the very talented Jens Kindervater. By Autumn on WeeKenDance you were already enjoying “How Does It Feel” and “Gotta Let You Go”.
Mike Di Scala – Mike Di Scala is just awesome and one of the hottest and hardest working UK producers. He’s most famous for being the singer and producer in Ultrabeat which I’ve played a lot of on WeeKenDance. As Re-Con and with other studio partners Squad-E, Hixxy, Darren Styles and others, he’s been an essential part of WeeKenDance’s fast and furious “Double Happy Hardcore” segment. Mike Shiver – Since he broke into the scene in 2003, Swedish Trance and Progressive DJ and Producer, Mike Shiver, has been sending shivers down thousands of people’s spines with his captivating sounds.
His tracks are always impressive, moving and energetic productions. I love “Everywhere You Are” it’s got a unique polished brilliance to it. Like his track “Nana” with Matias Lehtola, it does give you a “shiver”. Milk & Sugar - Mike "Milk" & Steven "Sugar" are Germanys best known housemusic DJs and producers. They have attitude - which is we’ll produce music to suit our own personal taste and bugger what the commercial people say and want. No wonder they have a pretty unique sound and needed their own label “Milk & Sugar Recordings” to get it done.
Milk Inc - It started out as a studio project in 1996 and is undoubtedly the most popular Belgian dance act ever. The Eurodance duo Milk Inc is made up of Linda Mertens (singer) and Regi Penxten (Keyboards and producer). Keep an ear out for the blend of techno ambiences with melodies and specific emotional moods created through the use of synthesizers.
They released their first single "La Vache" in 1997 and have been pumping out great tracks ever since. I really like Tonight and Sunrise which were featured on WeeKenDance in 2008, and 2009 brings some great tracks with Race, Forever, Guilty and Sweet Surrender which will all be on WeeKenDance.
Mint Royale - is a big beat electronic music act from Manchester, England. They were originally founded by the duo Neil Claxton and Chris Baker in 1997. Baker left the band in 2004, but Claxton continued to produce music using the Mint Royale name.
Their song "From Rusholme with Love" has been made recognisable through its extensive use in film and television series soundtracks. Notable examples include the theme tune for the film Kung Pow! Enter The Fist, as well as being present on the soundtrack of the films Vanilla Sky, Get Carter, and Serendipity.
In 2005 the group released "Waiting in the Rain" on the "Wait for You" EP - a remix of "Singin' in the Rain", which was featured in the January 2005 Volkswagen Golf GTI commercial. In 2007, Mint Royale released a compilation CD+DVD named Pop Is and on June 1st 2008, "Singin' In The Rain" re-entered the UK Singles Chart at number 28 after the success of George Sampson on Britain's Got Talent and Jack Chambers on So You Think You Can Dance Australia. It then became Number 1 on the British Singles Chart announced on June 8th 2008.
Morjac - Producers, songwriters & musicians Morten Lambertsen and Jacob Johansen, collectively known as Morjac are probably the most successful house & club act to ever come out of Denmark. They’ve proven time and time again that they have the vision, focus and expertise it takes to stay in the charts. This Danish Duo count leading DJ's such as Todd Terry, Roger Sanchez, Axwell, Judge Jules & Pete Tong, among their fans.
They release records simultaneously under different disguises, such as The Montanas, Teamsters, Macho Roostas, Marly, Natural High, Act Of Dog, Risskov Bandits, to name a few. These unique projects, all produced & written by this four-armed monster, have earned recognition in the clubs as well as on radio, all over the world. Morjac began appearing in the international charts in the early 2000s - and they've simply never left them. There first hit single "Stars" (2003) topped every dance chart was crowned "Essential New Tune" by Pete Tong on Radio 1 before crossing into the mainstream charts across the world.
Morjac has since had a successful story of providing huge club records, the type that burn away on the underground for several months, topping all clubs charts, then as soon as the temperature soars they ignite into full blown chart hits.
Myon & Shane 54 – These Hungarians trance artists are just fantastic. No wonder Armin Van Buuren has got them doing a mix compilation for his label Armada.
Myon reckons he’s got an incredible musical bond with Shane 54 "Either of us starts a musical sentence, the other will finish it like it was meant to be. It's weird, but very useful”.
Where’s the 54 come from I hear you asking, I think from the movie 54 which is about a Famous 70's NYC nightclub as seen and told through the eyes of a young employee. His number plates were Shane 54. Cool name but so is his real name “Elod Csaszar”!
Bottom line: if you hear a Myon & Shane 54 track or remix – it’s quality trance!
Nalin & Kane - German trance duo Nalin & Kane scored a huge international hit record in 1997, "Beachball," which put them in the big leagues of trance producers, alongside other popular trance producers from Germany like DJ Taucher and ATB. Nalin & Kane had been producing tracks for years before breaking into the mainstream originally releasing tracks as Nalin Inc.
"Beachball" is considered a classic trance track, and was notable for topping the club charts in many countries during its time of release. Like the majority of dance releases, the track has been remixed several times but none have come close to repeating the success of the original version.
Natasha Bedingfield - With a number 1 single in America, a number 1 UK debut album, and over 6.5 million units shifted worldwide, Natasha Bedingfield is the UKs biggest female pop star bar none - a bold, beautiful home grown answer to US Uber-Divas Christina Aguilera and Pink.
Natasha took the US by storm in 2007 with the first British chart topping hit by a female in almost twenty years. Vanity Fair singled her out as the spearhead of a new Britpop invasion and she was invited by her hero Prince to jam with him at a private party. Bruised Water with Chicane is my favourite.
Niels Van Gogh - When you think of Niels Van Gogh or NVG you immediately think of Pulverturm with its haunting lyrics Oh no, no, Can I get a hand? I'm comin', comin' in my life. A classic WeeKenDance Dance track it’s also in my new sets as new amazing modernised versions periodically pop up. In South Africa the track is kind of a hymn.
It seems multiple generations will grow up being hooked on the pulsating sounds and hypnotic pushing basslines. It was the first track from Niels and was produced together with the "the electronic freak" Eniac, who is also well-known for his Tom Novy productions.
2007 saw Niels and Eniac reunited and the sound is more stylish, more modern and more mature. On WeeKenDance I’ve played Pulvaturm 2.0 which went straight to Number 1 on the German Dance charts and Top 10 downloads with the Ministry of Sound. I’ve also played Turn in Around and coming up in Winter 2009 will be his remix of the Dance Classic Dreamers – I can’t wait!
Nick Skitz - During the very early 90's, the phenomenal career of Nick Skitz began. Through sheer hard work and an unquestioned amount of talent, Nick has become one of Australia's most recognized and sort after Deejays, remixers and producers.
In turn Nick Skitz has also undoubtedly created an era of Hi Nrg, Techno and Euro Dance music in Australia. His trademark remixes, megamixes and his own tracks have made Nick a household name amongst club goers.
Following his success with his own track "The Ultimate" which reached Number 2 on the official U.K. Dance Chart, Nick opened a gateway to Europe for his addictive club sounds.
Nikki Belle - One of the most popular singers in clubland both in the UK and in Ibiza, Liverpool based Nikki Belle received lots of fame being a part of Hot 'N' Juicy, the duo who recorded "Horny" with Mousse T. She’s also the singer for two Whelan & Di Scala tracks, "Teardrops" and "Sunset to Sunrise". With her ability to rap and MC over a wide variety of DJ sets as well as to perform her own club hits, Nikki’s popularity has grown hugely. This popularity has gone through the roof with “Trippin”, a collaboration with dance producers Cahill. Nitrous Oxide – I like my Polish Dark Beers like Grand Porter and Kozlak but now I like my Polish trance that’s to Nitrous Oxide Krzysztof Pretkiewicz.
Krzysztof is a bit like most of us. He just loved his trance and without any musical education started playing around with his PC and music software.
Like me, he loves his hard trance but has found his mark with progressive uplifting pieces. I love his track “Moon Dust” – it’s beautiful, special and a melodic journey.
So here’s a new progressive formula for you. Polish Beer + Polish Trance – now that’s cool. Nu Foundation - Hailing from Ireland, Happy Hardcore and trance artist Nu Foundation made his debut on DJ Seduction's Maximum Impact imprint towards the end of 2005 with the stompers "Taking My Time" and "Hardcore Generation". Since then he's appeared on some of the most critically acclaimed hardcore compilation series such as Hardcore Heaven, Hardcore Nation and Bonkers, has provided two massive remixes for Scott Brown's Evolved label and has released the equally solid tracks "Closer" and "Liberation" with Warped Science. The track that got my attention was “Want Your Love”.
Ohmna - To some Dutchies, the name Johan Cyber might ring a loud bell. To others, Ohmna is the only word that connects them with Producer/DJ Johan Groenewegen. Johan entered the music industry by organizing some of the first house parties in Holland. Since 2007 he’s taken the scene by storm with his progressive, dreamy ‘Ohmna’ productions. I love his deep, progressive and trancy sound. You be the judge – start with Key of Life and you’ll never go back.
Oliver Smith - You’d be pretty happy if Armin van Buuren described you as an "an excellent DJ" and "the best thing to happen in trance" by Mixmag plus "sensational" by DJ magazine. That’s the accolade for Englishman Oliver Jack Smith who just produces great trance sounds and is signed up to the infamous Anjunabeats label.
On WeeKenDance I’ve played Sunrise with Boom Jinx and my favourite remix of Above and Beyond “Far From in Love”.
Orbit1 - Sam Gonzalez has achieved international success with a multitude of hardcore releases on various labels across the globe including tracks featured on Hardcore Heaven, Hardcore Undergound, Bonkers 17, Drift:Trance and even on Konami’s DDR or Dance Dance Revolution.
Continuing on his legacy of catchy riffs, quick-fire sampling, out-of-this-world effects and thumping floor killers, Orbit1 combines an electric atmosphere and fresh sounds to devastating effect for one hell of an experience not to be missed!! Peetu S - Peetu Sainio or as he is better know Peetu S is one of the hottest talents from the Finland's trance and techno scene. His techy beats, massive beautiful melodies contrasted with hard sound can be found in every big jock's record case and on WeeKenDance. Peter Luts – So what’s Ian Van Dahl (which is now AnnaGrace) and Lasgo got in common? Let’s see - there’s great trance music, two of most successful Belgian trance projects ever, and there’s a common producer in Peter Luts.
He’s done some solo stuff but “The Rain” in 2010 is really nice and he sticks toa successful formula by getting a powerful female vocalist in Lien Vervoort. The voice is such a great instrument in trance – it really gets showcased. I love it when the vocalist is gritty but also holds the voice while the music contrasts against it. It’s done well in “The Rain”.
Phenex – Phenex was born and raised in Sweden and while living in Germany was seduced by the sounds of happy hardcore which were topping the charts. Upon returning to Sweden Phenex was distressed to learn the happy hardcore style had no popularity in Sweden.
But later the power of the Internet through on-line radios allowed a rekindling of love for hardcore. Not entirely satisfied by the quality of the songs, Phenex decided to give it a shot to see if it could be done better. That’s how you get into producing and lets’ hope there’s no going back for Phenex.
Picco - DJ Picco or Volker Heinrichs has been working in the dance business since the mid 90s when he founded Avancada. The project stormed the charts worldwide with its smash hit “Motherfucker Go!” and won an Ibiza Music Award. In the past years, he has remixed the tracks of more than fifty acts, including U96, Sash!, 89ers, The Real Booty Babes, Master Blaster and the Baha Men’s US No. 1 hit “Who Let the Dogs Out”. He received his first gold and platinum record 2000 for his remix of the Sash! classic “Adelante”.
As a DJ, he’s constantly touring Europe and resident in the top dance clubs. Picco also co-founded and is music-director of one of Germany’s leading dance radio stations: "Fantasy Dance FM". His show “No Limit” is on every Monday. His Single "Back to Hawaii" – a remix of the Hawaii Five-O theme tune, was in the Top 30 of the most successful dance-songs of 2007. I love the classic "Yeke Yeke" which seems to be No.1 in a dance chart somewhere in the world at any point in time.
Platnum - are a three-piece hip-hop and garage vocal trio from Manchester, England, consisting of male vocalist Aaron Evers and female vocalists Mina Poli and Michelle McKenna.
The trio are best-known for providing the vocals on H Two O's 2008 hit "What's It Gonna Be", which was a very popular track on WeeKenDance and charted in the top ten of the UK Singles Chart in 2008, climbing as high as the #2 spot. I just love their track Love Shy which stormed the UK charts at number 12. I’m just not tiring of the track.
The Real Booty Babes – The Real Booty Babes are a couple of German creative forces - Jens Ophälders and Jens Kindervater. Their productions and remixes can regularly be found on top positions in the charts and in DJ’s cases. And they’re also responsible for the labels YAWA and Kickfresh Recordings which deliver high quality Dance and House-tracks for the international DJ-scene.
One of their favourite projects is The Real Booty Babes and they’re always remixing loads of tracks for artists like Cascada, Jeckyll & Hyde, Klubbingman, Hampenberg, C-Bool and many more.
Re-Con – is one of the many aliases of British DJ, record producer, remixer, singer and songwriter, Mike Di Scala. He’s most famous for being in dance act Ultrabeat. As a DJ Mike can be seen playing mainly around the North West of England with flying visits up and down the UK and to the white isle of Ibiza. You can catch Mike in residency every Saturday night at the legendary glammed up house night society in Liverpool England. Reeves – He’s a trance and progressive DJ & producer from Aberdeen, Scotland. Reeves, is one of his alter egos but the man is Andy Duguid. His career took off in September 2006 when his production “Hypocrisy” was picked up by the mighty Tiësto. The support of the grand elite of DJ’s followed soon after that.
Call of Loneliness is an amazing track – you shut your eyes and you see a musical vision and the “call” well – it just is a call of Loneliness – you feel it though your body as the electo beat grows. It’s been one of my favourite track on Autumn on WeeKenDance 2010. Ritman - Jamie Ritmen otherwise known as 'Gridbreaker' for his hard dance work first began producing dance music at the age of 16 at High School with Darren Styles and Paul Hughes formerly part of DJ Force and The Evolution. They went on to perform at Hardcore Heaven, Dance Paradise and Destiny.
After the group disbanded, Darren and Force became Force and Styles and the rest for them is history. Jamie came back into the scene in 2006, setting up a studio in his bedroom and attends Point Blank Music College in London to develop his engineering skills. With the help of Styles and Breeze he began working tirelessly to create his own style, and once again determined to have an impact on the hardcore scene which by now had changed with a huge trance euro element, this suited his style.
His tracks are now being played by Darren Styles, Mark Breeze, Dougal, Hixxy ,Kutski on his Radio 1 show. He’s just poised for big things.
Robbie Long - embarked on his DJ mission at a tender age of 11 after watching Breakdance The Movie and being inspired by Tim ‘The Glove’ Taylor on the Ice T track ‘Reckless’! He fell in love with the Electro scene and soon joined a local Breakdance crew. This, however, didn’t gain the support of his parents as he kept coming home with burn marks on his back where he’d been spinning on it! He was determined to get involved with Hip-Hop one way or another and found himself being drawn towards DJ’ing.
But with America so far from Portsmouth and rappers he loved rapping about issues that Robbie couldn’t relate to, he made the move to hardcore mixed with Hip-Hop with Breakbeats, heavy basslines and rap samples giving him a rich unique style. Fast forward, a true veteran on the decks, Robbie has now clocked up an impressive 15 years (2008) on the Rave / Hardcore circuit all over the world.
Robyn - She’s the founder and CEO of Konichiwa Records. The most decorated professional on the streets, with a perfect track record since kindergarten when she used to whip schoolboy ass.
She is Robyn. The most killingest pop star on the planet. A pint-sized atom bomb dosed on electric.
A star in Sweden from the age of 16, she was the favourite daughter in Max Martin’s transcontinental girl gang (a fraternity that boasts the membership of everyone from Avril Lavigne and Pink to Britney and Kelis).
Roger Shah - Roger Shah produces warm, sunny progressive tracks with magical tones that warm you up on the coldest winter nights. He’s also being hotting up the scene being regarded as one of Europe's most prolific and highly-regarded producers.
“Your So Cool” was the first track of his I played on WeeKenDance and I love playing it, shutting my eyes and just being carried away.
Sash! – I vividly remember my brother Mark slipping me an obscure CD in the mid 90s by a German named Sash! In an era where there might only be one or two tracks that are any good on an album I was blown away at how each track seemed to me to be a hit. And so it was that Sascha Lappessen, Ralf Kappmeier and Thomas "Alisson" Lüdke had all tracks from their album enter charts all around the world leading to 17 million+ sales with 65 gold and platinum awards. Sash! more than any other band proves how Australia was in the dance music wilderness. Conglomerated music stations played safe classis hits and while Encore Une Fois (translated One More Time) raced to Number 1 in the US and Number 1 on MTV Europe charts, it was barely played in Australia reaching a meagre 35. Every dance music loving person has a Sash! CD in their library. You should get one if you don’t already.
In 2008 Sash! came back with a new single "Raindrops (Encore Une Fois)". The song is a mash up of his first single "Encore Une Fois" and Stunt's 2006 hit "Raindrops". In the UK the song jumped from 180 to #9 in the singles chart on its first week of release. In Australia you’ll hear it on 2RDJ 88.1 WeeKenDance with me, Edward Mandla.
Scooter - It’s upbeat, strong and noisy but the trademark sound of spoken or shouted vocals makes it clear you’re listening to Scooter. The Hard Dance band is considered the most successful single-record German act with 23 top ten hits, sales of over 25 million records and an amazing collection of 80 gold and platinum awards. The band’s early recordings were happy hardcore or hard trance but they’ve experimented with hardstyle and jumpstyle, and occasionally hip hop, hard rock and house. Keep an ear out for the shouted vocals, pitch-shifted chorus vocals and live performance elements such as crowd samples which are distinctly Scooter. Scott Brown - DJ Scott Brown produced tracks at a prolific rate in the late '90s assembling a voluminous back catalog for himself in just a few short years recording for labels like Evolution and Twisted Vinyl. By the end of the '90s, he made the jump from 12"s to full-lengths, beginning with the Future Progression album on Mainframe Records in 1999. Both as a producer and a DJ, Scott Brown has slowly but steadily become one of the happy hardcore scene's more respected figures. Sean Tyas – A New York native, now residing in Switzerland, Sean Tyas brings to the dance floor a mix of melodic harmony and driving groove that hits you in your legs and heart.
No doubt the move to Europe was a good call – it’s where the action is and where you get the grounding in the business. It’s allowed Sean to focus on his own original productions. I loved playing “I Remember Now” on WeeKenDance and stand by for more Sean Tyas moving forward.
September – Swedish Petra Marklund – While her songs are danceable and catchy they always have their base in Petra's dark, surprisingly sad voice that lingers in your ears. Great singer just listen to Satellites and Looking for Love.
Sharkey - Jon Sharkey is undoubtedly one of the most established names in the Hardcore scene. As the only UK Hardcore artist to try his hand at all aspects of Hardcore whether it be on the microphone, in the studio, as an engineer or as a DJ, Jon's successes in all of these fields place him as the most prolific Hardcore innovator of all time.
His focus on guiding the talented bright lights and tirelessly harnessing the raw talent of upcoming production engineers in Hardcore, came because he considers it to be one of the most important aspects of his job as without the future generation, there will be no future hardcore!
He’s no stranger to compilations being one of the founding DJ’s of the award winning Bonkers compilation series and now one of the main DJ’s on the Freeformation album. Bonkers is now the biggest Hardcore compilation album of all time and has gained gold and silver sales awards in the UK.
DJ SHOG - See Sven Greiner
Slinkee Minx – is a dance act from Melbourne, Australia, who formed in 2001 and are best known for their 2004 cover of Belinda Carlisle's "Summer Rain", which debuted at #5 on the Australian ARIA Music Charts and reached a whopping #3 on the UK Mainstream Charts. Summer Rain keeps getting remixed and just keeps getter better and better!
Annemarie Failla, Michelle Palmer and Belinda Tartaglia make up Slinkee Minx. Musically, they are influenced by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, Modjo, and Moloko.
In the footsteps of Summer Rain is “Send Me an Angel” featuring a ripping bass line, funky electro beats and plenty of vocal attitude. They’ll be plenty of remixes of this one!
Slipmatt – Who’s the Godfather of Hardcore? Matthew Edward Nelson is the Legendary UK hardcore and happy hardcore DJ/producer, better known as Slipmatt.
Slipmatt is one of the most popular and respected DJs in the world and continues to attract capacity crowds across the globe with sets that never fail to deliver on expectations. From peak time T.V appearances to high profile radio shows to running his own record labels, Slipmatt's heart is still 100% to his DJing and producing/remixing tunes. His skill is continuing to rock the old crowd at events all over the world while pulling in a new generation, and in styles ranging from Old Skool & Ravebreaks to Upfront Hardcore and from Upfront Funky Electro House to Club Classics and even Drum and Bass.
For the past ten years Matt has continued to broaden the style of music he plays and with the rise of Trance and also the new Breaks sound, he often plays a mixture of different styles in his renowned unique way which fuses different beats all together in a style that sets him apart from the rest. Solarity – A DJ/production duo from London, Solarity spawned in 2008 from the fresh talents of Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman. Their trademark productions have caused a sensation worldwide, gaining dance floor and radio play from some of the world's biggest DJs. There sound is fresh, clear and it takes you on a nice ride.
Sparky - Sparky is one of the most prolific engineers in the hardcore scene at the moment. It's not just hardcore though, he engineers all styles of electronic music including Drum & Bass, Scouse house and Pop trance. While you might not see many records with the "Sparky" name on them, you will most certainly have heard some of the tracks he has engineered, produced and written. With many clients like Slipmatt, Billy Daniel Bunter & Spenno (to name a few) signed to some of the most high profile labels in the scene, Sparky is the go to guy when it comes to getting the most out of tracks. I love his remix of Sash’s Mysterious Times. One of the most popular happy hardcore tracks I’ve played on WeeKenDance in 2008 was Sparky and Charm – Someday.
Squeezer – You get dizzy trying to work out the history of Squeezer with lots of changes in the line up ranging from people leaving the group to pursue acting through to a suicide. Few would have expected them to make a comeback. Their older tracks Blue Jeans, Tamagotchi and Without You were great – remember those silly Japanese Tamagotchi toys? Squeezer wrote the official track.
After a long silence Squeezer came back in 2008 with a new fresh hot style best symbolised by the remix of High Heels. Jim Reeves has been with the band from the start and is now joined by Nikole Arndt and Andreas Höhnke. Their Megamix ’08 is a great showcase of ten years of fun tracks which you might want to check out.
Stefan Gruenwald - since 1988 is a famous German DJ and also a songwriter, producer and artist. In 1996 he started to produce his first club project M.A.S. Project followed in 1997 by the worldwide famous project SM-Trax. I remember that - “SM-Trax is calling” – that was good!
His latest release is a collaboration between two good old friends: Stefan Gruenwald vs. Jerry Ropero. Together with the amazing female voice of Anna Maria they have done a house electro cover version of the old classic track "Let Me Be Your Fantasy". You be the judge – I reckons it’s a ripper. StoneBridge - If you’ve danced in a club, the chances are you’ve danced to a StoneBridge production. Think ”Put ‘Em High” and “Take Me Away”. His unique brand of sexy house music has ruled dance floors for over 20 years, regularly crashing into the charts across the world.
The Swede is completely on top of his game with the 2010 release of the “Morning After” which is his special brand of peak time house. Special being the operative word – it’s brilliant. I hope StoneBridge continues to produce the great sounds well into the future. Stormtrooper - Stormtrooper alias Peter Nitschke started Dj-ing in 1997 in small Clubs in his Hometown Rosenheim. It didn’t take long until everybody knew that his sound was too hard for most of the Rosenheim parties, so he started playing in towns like Munich and Salzburg, where more people liked the harder sound. In 2002 he founded his own small Label called SCUM Records, where he compiled CD-Compilations with Hardcore Acts from all over Germany. Everything got bigger very quick.
Stu Allan - Stu Allan has been one of the UK’s top Hardcore DJ’s since the very beginning. His hardcore radio shows on Key 103, Manchester were legendary and his productions as Visa have been some of the all time classics. Since the success of the first Hardcore Nation CD, Stu has been back in the studio producing some absolute belters and remixing for some of the biggest names in the business. He is the big Daddy of Hardcore!
Styles and Breeze – Whenever I see the name Styles and Breeze I immediate think of their track Heartbeatz which is one of my all time favourite Happy Hardcore tracks.
It was in 1999 when Happy Hardcore superstar Darren Styles teamed up hardcore DJ Mark Breeze and they have given us plenty to be happy about: Heartbeatz, Your Shining, Amigos and Electric to name a few. No wonder they have a global army of fans.
Heartbeatz features the great vocals of Karen Danzig and there’s a Specialist Sound Remix which takes the Hard Trance track to a more suave Progressive House mix which is awesome. Sugarbabes - Multi-ethnic U.K. trio Sugababes jumped aboard the teen pop bandwagon prior to the new millennium and exuded their own sassy demeanor without the frivolity of most mainstream acts. Siobhan Donaghy, Keisha Buchanan, and Mutya Buena were barely in their teens when they formed in 1998, sharing a liking of garage, hip-hop, and dance music. Initially, Sugababes were three friends who enjoyed singing along to the radio. The name ‘Sugababes' originates from Buchanan's school nickname, 'Sugar baby'. Initially there were known as "The Sugababies" before it was tweaked to Sugarbabes.
During a Japanese promotional tour Siobhán Donaghy left the group stating initially that she wanted to pursue a fashion career and allegedly was diagnosed with clinical depression amid reports of in-fighting between the Sugababes members.
They have been named the most successful all-female act of the 21st century in the UK they have had more top ten hits with original songs than any other girl group since The Supremes, Destiny's Child, Eternal and Bananarama.
Supermarket - is an experimental dose of original electronic music and imagery, delivered live with equal emphasis. Breakbeats of varying tempo ranging from dub and glitch through to dancehall and drum n' bass are met with video, animated and celluloid imagery ranging from the abstract to sampled and remixed. Be great to see that live.
Regular faces on the club and arts circuits in South Australia, the Supermarket team's live audio-visual show launched in Buffalo, New York in November 2007, and has since toured the USA and Canada twice, and appeared at numerous events in Australia including the Adelaide Fringe Festival and Sydney Underground Film Festival. Sven Greiner – As bursting with energy as a producer or DJ, Sven Greiner or DJ Shog is known as the DJ with two faces. He’s one of Germanys best DJs and internationally you could only describe his career as fast and furious. I’ve played Sven and his many faces lots on WeeKenDance and I know you love it. He’s also part of groups you’ll hear me excitedly play on WeeKenDance – Mandala Brothers, Dream Dance Alliance plus Driver and Face.
Sy - started djing professionally in 1989 playing hip-hop, soul and house. His unique mixing style and hard work have helped to establish his reputation as the “Scratchmaster”. His constant high quality upfront sets helped him gain the title of Hardcore Heaven's "Hardcore DJ Of The Year" for 2004 & 2005. Sy appears at virtually every major UK Hardcore gig.
The hardcore scene continues to grow and together with his long-time producing partner, DJ Unknown, Sy has helped the faith in hardcore spread.
Sytronik - Alex Ridge known as Sytronik, has recently risen since 2006 to become one of the new stars of the hardcore scene. Over the last two years, Alex has played across the UK & Europe and has been dubbed by Slipmatt as the “Godson of Hardcore”. Only in his early 20s, he has conquered so much, many people can only dream of. DJ Tatana - Ever since Tatana Sterba mixed the CD ‘Live at Street Parade’ in 1998, she’s been the Queen of the Swiss trance scene drawing in crowds in like no other. One of the most successful trance artists of the 2000s in the Swiss charts, she just knows how to build up the energy and take you on a dream trance journey. Technikore - Now firmly established as one of the most respected and biggest selling artists in the world of Hard Dance, Technikore aka Technikal and aka Alf Bamford has kept up the blistering form that first got him noticed, with a slew of classic productions. Never one to rest on his laurels, he has pushed his immense production skills further by successfully producing acclaimed Hardcore tracks alongside his unique brand of Hard Dance, as well as producing Electro and Psy-Trance-tinged material.
Producing from the age of thirteen, he got his first track signed at the age of seventeen - and has gone on to sell hundreds of thousands of records across the globe.
Terri B – A lot of tracks I play on WeeKenDance are featuring Terri B. Over the years, Terri has become one of House music’s most re-known MCs and vocalists with a sultry and soothing sound that leaves you gasping for more. Shes’ the former leade singer of 2Eivissa who had the hit dance track “Oh La La La” and Avantgarde with the hard hitting “Get Down.” There’s a new version of Oh La La La on the Ministry of Sound The Annual Spring 2009 which is great.
Terry Ferminal – Scotland’s Mark Sinclair burst onto the global dance scene in 2006 under the guise of Terry Ferminal. He comes from a bit of a musical family – a jazz drumming dad, brother guitarist and granddad was the local church pianist. What is it with Pohms and great talent coming out of churches - maybe there’s something in this for all of us?
I think that’s why his sounds are well developed, show lots of variety and you don’t get sick of them.
I’m sure glad he chose dance/techno as a style. I love a Thousand Miles. Keep an eye on him in MySpace – there’s lots more to come from him. Thoneick – Eddie Thoneick is the name that’s synonymous with uplifting high octane house music in all varieties. It’s a musical whirlwind of brilliant rhythms, diving beats and soaring vocals. I first heard his track “Love Sensation” and loved it. “Perfect Moment” which lives up to its name once again grabbed my attention.
Toni Leo - started her career at the age of 7 as a child dancer in professional shows and pantomimes in Sheffield theatres. As a teenager, she went on to work with amateur local theatre groups and continued to dance in cabaret both in England and Portugal. After singing in various pop "cover" acts, Toni started to write and record her own songs with song-writing partner, Andy L or Andy Littlewood. Andy L of course is one of the great Club and Happy Hardcore producer/songwriters.
In 2000, they co-wrote a song with "Indigo Blue" for Edel Records called "My Way Or No Way". This track featured on a Smash Hits compilation album called "Smashin Hits 3" and recently on the soundtrack to the film "The Number One Girl" starring Vinnie Jones. They wrote the winning song of the "2002 UK Songwriting Contest" and have had success in various other contests. Come on Out with Darwin is a track I particularly like. TV Rock - The dance music beachmark in Australia is TV Rock. The collaboration between Grant Smillie and Ivan Gough is just hot. In 2010, I started playing on WeeKenDance the Axwell Remix of TV Rock Ft. Rudy – In the Air and smiled every time I played the track – it’s so good, absolutely one of the best dance tracks in the world at it’s time of release and it’s Australian! Fingers crossed they’re inspiring a new generation of dance music producers in Australia.
DJ Twista – DJ Twista or Dean Willson has been involved in the underground dance music scene the mid 90s working as one of UKs leading graphic designers within the dance music industry, a DJ and producer amongst some of the biggest promotions & artists spanning a wide variety of rave music.
DJing has taking him all over the UK and Europe playing to crowds over 4000 people for some of the scenes longest standing events such as Awol, Desire, Fantazia, Fusion, Helter Skelter, Moondance, One Nation and Raindance to name a few. His styles are very versatile ranging from the from his 1st love - Rave Breaks & Old Skool Hardcore ’90 - ’96 to Upfront Drum & Bass and Classic Jungle, and he’s also been known to play classic house and club classics sets. TyDi - Tyson Illingworth is TyDi, a Brisbane based DJ & producer, who in 2008 was voted Australia's number 1 DJ. He backed that up in 2009. His track “Somehow” is World Class and at home amongst the best Trance and Progressive tracks in Europe. No wonder he got signed to Armin Van Buuren’s own label Armada. I’ve played his tracks to my friends and when I tell them he’s Australian – I get “BS – No Way”. That’s as good as an accolade as you get in Australia.
DJ UFO - real name Jason Holloway, has been involved with music production and DJing since 1988. As a writer and producer he has been at the forefront of Hardcore music working with artists and Djs including Hixxy, Breeze, Slipmat, Ramos, Supreme and Sharkey. As a DJ, UFO he’s played regularly at some of the biggest and most respected UK events.
Owning his own recording studio in Southampton in the south of the UK, he is also one of the most prolific writers and producers, engineering tracks for other artists in the UK. You probably hear more UFO produced tracks than you realize!
Ultimate Devotion - Long standing friends Stu Hughes and Stu Connor always talked about getting together and combining their musical talents to come up with some original material. It all happened in August of 2007 when they were both in the local gym and decided that too much time had been wasted. Now with their popularity rapidly rising keep any eye out for their tracks as their future looks very bright. BTW, they also record as Digital Rush. Their initial tracks Sunrise, Think of You, On My Way blew me away are were featured on 2RDJ WeekenDance in 2008/09.
Ultrabeat – Making tracks since 2002, the Liverpool based music production group Ultrabeat comprises Mike Di Scala, Chris Henry and Ian Redman. They’re the guys behind many great songs such as "Pretty Green Eyes, "Feelin’ Fine", “Sure Feels Good and "Elysium (I Go Crazy)". Their music is generally classed under the genre known as Scouse House – a happier variant of bouncy techno.
Ultra Flirt – When I first played Dancing with Tears in My Eyes, I loved it and it was a popular track on WeeKenDance. It was by Ultra Flirt who I had never heard of and figured it was probably a one off. Good news it isn’t. They’ve added their energetic talents to the “Time is Now 2009”. Ultra Flirt - what a great name for these three hot girls.
Uniting Nations – are Paul Keenan and Daz Sampson who met at a buck’s night. Paul a policeman grabbed Daz’s shoulder as he was about to relieve himself against a wall. Daz turned on the legendary Sampson charm and before they knew it, they were chatting away about dance music. Daz was itching to get back to making dance records and was searching for a writing and production partner who could match his ambitions – enter policeman Paul Keenan. In early 2004, they struck gold with their cover of Out Of Touch, inspired by Daz hearing the Hall & Oates original on the soundtrack to the game Grand Theft Auto III. Oh - they also have the most racy video clips.
DJ Unknown - DJ Chris Unknown started producing Hardcore in 1993 under the artist name “DJ’s Unknown”, a pseudonym chosen mainly because the recordings contained numerous samples, allowing him a certain degree of anonymity! Retaining the name, DJ Unknown regularly deejays to massive audiences all over the World, particularly in Australia. His partnership with DJ Sy is a smash and they now boast an impressive discography of over 90 releases (2008).
Utah Saints - Having sold millions of records to date, recorded with the likes of REM’s Michael Stipe, and performing with U2 and others on mega-stadium tours, Utah Saints remain one of the most trail-blazing outfits within electronic music. Following a self-imposed exile, Tim Garbutt and Jez Willis buried the Utah Saints name in the early 90s (following unreleased albums and contract oblivion), vowing to return under that guise when the time was right. In the meantime they’ve produced and remixed under their Beatvandals moniker, DJed all over the world, and run the highly successful club night, Sugarbeat, in both England and Scotland.
Now ready to take the world by storm once more, Utah Saints came back in 2008, recording new material for a studio album and playing gigs across the UK. Something Good 08 is a ripper track and I’m sure a remix of a track by a girl I grew up loving, Kate Bush. V-SAG - Vasilis Sagonas is V-SAG and he just makes beautiful progressive music productions. Keep an ear out for a unique weave of melodies, chords, effects, and percussion which express his feelings. He came to my attention with Feather which highlights all his skills. V-SAG music makes you feel, it haunts, draws you in and gently hangs around in your system for days. Vandalism – I just love an Electro/House project & live act from Australia. Vandalism, Andrew & Cassie Van Dorsselaer, are from Melbourne and they deliver an electro house rampage of the senses. Fingers crossed they take the world by storm.
Velvet - 2008 sees the new smash club and radio hit “Fix Me” from Swedish glamour Velvet – she’s a bit of a modern Agnetha from Abba. Her real name is Jenny Pettersson and as a teenager she studied at the Stockholm Ballet Academy before becoming a singer.
Verano – Hailing from the Ruhr valley in Germany Marco Juliano & Stefan Rio are Verano and also two-thirds of the group De-Grees. Known for giving fans an unforgettable party night the boys are into dance, trance, house, electro, jump and hard style. They are part of the amazing German Yawa Recordings stable with other great dance artists such as Real Booty Babes, Playa’z, Ekowraith, Kindervater and Picco. Check out their remix of Rhythm of the Night – it’s sharp and a beauty.
Vicky Fee - There are not many dance music vocalists who can put their hands up and say they’ve written and sung a number of major dance floor anthems in a variety of styles of dance music worldwide – Vicky Fee can, and she’s done it on the trance, house and hardcore scene.
Vicky Fee’s work can be found on most major compilation albums including Ministry of Sound, Clubland Xtreme, Judge Jules Judgement Sundays and most of the ripper hardcore compilations. She’s also written and been featured on tracks with the best producers such as Ultrasonic, Weaver, Jerry Ropero & Dennis the Menace, Heaven 7, Stu Allan, Mark Breeze, Al Storm, and that’s mentioning a few.
I love Fading Away with Weaver and Take Me Away with Al Storm.
Vogue - There have been many "Super" girl groups in the history of pop, it's time the old school steps down to make way for a new breed of girl group. One with attitude! ... It's time for Vogue!
Vogue burst onto the scene in 2007 with their No. 1 dance chart hit "Missing You" and have remained a dance floor favourite ever since, appearing on countless massive selling compilation albums such as the "big tunes" album (Ministry on Sound) and the "hard2beat" compilation album.
In 2008, the Vogue signed to Ministry of Sound and never looked back. The girls Rachel, Charlotte and Louise (the latter two being sisters) were discovered by UK Producers Saint, who saw the girls perform, instantly signed them up and started about recording the album "From Klubland With Love"
Weaver - For the past 9 years, hardcore music has been the passion and drive behind Weaver. From DJ’ing to producing, Weaver is well known throughout the rave scene world wide. He’s built up a huge and strong fan base around the globe as Australia’s number 1 hardcore DJ and producer. This has lead him to be signed to nearly every hardcore record label including the worlds number 1 hardcore record label Raver Baby Records.
DJ Wickaman – I’ll never stop making drum & bass, it’s in my blood like a drug says DJ Wickaman or Andy Parsons. Constantly trying to improve his sound, he’s not looking for "a style" as such, just an overwhelming desire to make his tunes as fat as possible each in their own unique way. In his constant quest to find that sound, he may have just done that with Jamie Spratling or J Majik with their track Crazy World as J Majik and Wickaman.
Wideboys - The Wideboys consist of the dynamic UK duo Eddie Craig & Jim Sullivan. They’ve been working together since 1996. Craig has run a record shop since 1995 and DJing while Sullivan has run a recording studio since 1993 and is responsible for chart successes, such as Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s "Power of Love" revamp (reaching number 6) and the follow up, "Two Tribes", which hit number 15. The list of official remixes the boys have done is endless including Snoop Doggy Dog, Pussycat Dolls, Bob Sinclair, Basshunter, Rihanna, and Sugarbabes and that’s just naming a few. The Wideboys won 'Best Newcomer' at the 2000 UK Garage awards.
A Favourite on WeeKenDance is their remix of their 2001 hit Sambuca as well as Daddy-O Wippenberg – Goodness “Pong” from Wippenberg is such a hot progressive track. Wippenberg or Olaf Dieckmann is one of the most diverse DJs/producers around and he’s been supplying the world’s dancefloors with the greatest house, electro, trance and techno talent.
Famously, Olaf carved his name deep into the heart of the mid-90s dancefloor with his very first track - the unforgettable, speaker-assaulting ‘Neurodancer’. To this day ‘Neurodancer’ rests as one of the hardest-to-find and most in-demand pieces of dance vinyl in the world - regularly changing hands for many times its original price.
Yves Larock – Yves Larock is a French House DJ & producer, currently based in Switzerland. Taking influence from a wide musical spectrum, Yves unique production style brings together elements of House, Hip-Hop, R&B, Ragga, Reggae and Electro with devastating effect. “Rise Up” began rocking dance floors in 2007 and crossed over to great commercial success. I love “Listen the the Voice Inside”
